Spiritual Direction at The Assisi Institute

God-Realization

AS119_Spiritual_Direction_Flyer_Front_V1The spiritual life is guided by the Holy Spirit and by the grace of the Guru. Our job is to learn to listen to that guidance. The primary context for listening is prayerful meditation. Yet, there are times when we need help in discerning God’s guidance.

WHAT IS SPIRITUAL DIRECTION?
Spiritual direction is about growing in understanding about your relationship with God. Spiritual direction helps develop the gift of discernment that is done through prayer, meditation, and study of Kriya and mystical Christianity that enables us to be more attentive to how God is leading and guiding us.

Spiritual direction is not psychological counseling or therapy. However, since every aspect of our daily lives affect our relationship with God, ordinary concerns such as work, family, relationships, emotional hurts, fears, and even our dreams may be shared in spiritual direction, if done in a prayerful/contemplative manner.

WHO SHOULD SEEK SPIRITUAL DIRECTION?
Spiritual direction is for anyone who seeks a deeper, real relationship with God through the practice of prayer, stillness and silence.

WHAT IS A SPIRITUAL MENTOR?
A spiritual mentor is someone you can talk with confidentially about your spiritual life. He or she listens, prays with us, enters into the silence with us, reflects on the scripture and spiritual teachings with us, and helps relate teachings to modern life. Spiritual mentors are neither gurus nor psychologists, but mature and seasoned guides on the spiritual path.

HOW OFTEN DO I MEET WITH MY MENTOR?
Frequency of direction varies with individual need and circumstances. In most cases people find that meeting every four weeks is ideal. Each session should last for approximately one hour.

COST
There is no designated fee for spiritual direction, but it is customary to offer a donation to help to continue to support the ministry.
