Practical Lessons for Successful Living Through Meditation and Mindfulness – Guidance for Youth and Those Who Work with Youth

HS_Flyer_Front_V1 Scientists have proven that mindfulness and meditation practices literally rewire one’s brain and promote both cognitive clarity and a sense of wellbeing. Many organizations already use these simple, non-religious techniques to improve the lives of individuals in schools, businesses, and other settings.

While focused on youth, HEARING SILENCE is an outreach program that aims to help both youth and adults to cultivate mindfulness and meditation practices. Our educational programs help participants to be more aware, to better understand their daily choices, and to handle the challenges of life more peacefully.

Mission of Hearing Silence

Hearing Silence, an outreach of The Assisi Institute, serves youth, and those who work with youth, through the instruction of mindfulness and meditation practices. Our educational offerings help youth to be more aware, better understand their choices and actions, and to more peacefully and successfully handle the challenges of life.

The Need and This Offering

“Stress is the number one enemy of education, especially in inner city schools. It creates tension and violence, and compromises the cognitive and psychological capacity of students.”

–James S. Dierke, 2008 National Middle School Principal of the Year

Epidemics of bullying, depression and obesity, over-stimulation (by various forms of media) and attention deficit disorders, stresses of chaotic home lives, academic expectations and standardized testing, and the gaps left by traditional education models and common extracurricular activities (traditional clubs and sports).

“It isn’t academic education alone that makes people happy. It is ‘how-to-live’ education — how to develop a harmonious, moral life, stronger will power, and greater understanding — that will bring happiness.”

–Paramahansa Yogananda, author of Autobiography of a Yogi

This outreach aims to cultivate:
• Inner calm, clarity and peacefulness
• Improved concentration and capacity for learning
• Self-discipline and use of common sense (wise decision making)
• Spirit of service (to others)
• Truthfulness, compassion and kindness
• Improved self-esteem and management of mental and emotional states
• Conflict resolution and peace making

Evidence-Based, Secular Focus

While Hearing Silence outreach of The Assisi Institute, special effort has been made to remove any references to religious doctrine or spiritual beliefs. It does not conflict with any pre-existing belief systems or promote a specific religious ideology. Instead, what is offered is simple instruction of meditation technique and mindfulness lessons. A large body of research has shown that the practice of meditation and mindfulness techniques are instrumental for cultivating awareness and positive development (of character).
